Everybody Will Be Talking About...Uffie

Electro-pop hip-hop sweetheart Uffie may be releasing her debut album, Sex Dreams and Denim Jeans, at the tender age of 22, but don’t mistake her for a newcomer. Born Anna-Catherine Hartley and nicknamed Uffie by her father (derived fromoeuf, the French word for “egg”), the Paris-based singer/rapper scored a major underground club hit in 2006 with her debut single “Pop the Glock” and has since steadily eked out a series of hipsterchampioned singles on très-cool French dance label Ed Banger Records, including a guest spot on Justice’s 2007 foot-stomper “Tthhee Ppaarrttyy.” So why did the album take so long? “I was touring constantly, and when I was home it was hard to get off my couch and into the studio,” says Uffie, whose penchant for neon eyeliner and spandex leotards makes her look like a walking American Apparel ad. “Plus, there was so much pressure to live up to the hype.” She needn’t worry:Sex Dreams and Denim Jeans is a nonstop party-anthem generator, influenced by everything from “old-school ’80s rap to the Specials and Siouxsie and the Banshees” and featuring her signature bad-girl rhymes over beats from such top-notch producers as Mr. Oizo and Madonna-collaborator Mirwais. “The main vibe is just youth,” she says. “I don’t take myself that seriously as a rapper.” Seems like the rest of us should.
